Ok, I've done it too. A couple of times actually. But as far as I can tell, some of our league members aren't putting a lot of thought into this idea. Ok, some of our league members are 10 years old too, but that won't stop me from writing about this topic, even if they won't ever read it.
First of all, if you're going to delete an old character? Stop and first have a look at what you've got. You might only be one quest away from a pretty good item that is worth a lot of money. You might have a pretty good blood count too, and it would be a shame to waste that free Blood Essence. And lastly, make sure to store all the clothes, weapons, relics, everything... at the courier, because there is bound to be some stuff you can re-use on your new character.
If you plan it well, you can actually store a whole bunch of stuff for your new character and I have a list of minimum items a new character should start with.
- 1 each of the Level 1 and 2 elixirs. That is 10 items.
- 1 each of the HP pants/jackets and 1 each of the HP/VE Recovery pants/jackets
- clothing with speed helps too, shoes/hat/wrist bands
- at least 4 low level weapons suitable to the character you want to build, all at least +2
- all of the Advanced Meditation/Steps/Lightfoot tomes for the new character
- pocket accesories suitable for a vagabond, until you can join a clan and/or use relics
Beyond this list of items for a new character, you should have a good hard look at the Str/Ess/Wis/Con/Dex statistics, and what you are going to need in the future of your new character. Each role, in every clan has one attribute that is hard to develop. With a new character you are allowed to assign a few free points as you see fit. You should probably throw those free points at the hard to develop attribute. In fact, until you actually pick a role in your clan you should probably continue to add one point per level to that hard to develop attribute.
For example, I usually play BoT warriors. It is hard for this role to develop Essence. So early on, and I mean right from the start, I started adding to Essence. Since chosing my role in the clan I haven't had to add Essence at all, because I have enough. Now that I'm using HP Recovery equipment (weapons and clothes), I sometimes run out of VE before I run out of HP. As a warrior, that doesn't bother me too much. If I have a good place to run to, I can simply run there instead of using LightFoot.
So what are your tips for new characters? We would love to hear your ideas.

That's why I mentioned it. I'll explain why a new character should have the VE Recovery clothes in a future post.

Adding points to your penalty stat before choosing a role confers no additional benefit after you choose your role. If you assign 100 points to your penalty stat before choosing your role, it is automatically adjusted after you choose your role, and it becomes 50.
I advise that you should always choose to purge your chi once you pick your role. (This doesn't compromise your chance of rechoosing your role, nor does choosing not to purge your chi give you any additional chances of choosing your role.)
